Antti Kusta Leinonen

Antti Kustaa Leinonen was a passenger on Titanic.

Early life[]

Antti Kustaa Leinonen was born somewhere in Finland in 1880, probably in Valitaipale. Not much is known about his background. He was married to a woman named Josefina.

Antti lived in Oulunkylä, in the parish of Helsinki, before embarking on the SS Polaris in Hanko on April 3, 1912. This ship would take on many other passengers from Finland, who would go later to Titanic. Leinonen was heading for America. He was married to a woman named Josefina. Antti Leinonen was aiming to settle in New York. His ticket cost 269 Finnish marks. The Polaris was stationary in Copenhagen before reaching Hull in England on April 7.

Titanic[]

On April 10, Titanic set course for New York. Her Maiden Voyage had begun. Most likely, Antti came aboard in Southampton. He was a Third Class passenger.

On April 14, Titanic met unfortunate circumstances as she had a collision with an iceberg. Her starboard side scraped against the thick wall and it caused damage. Small incisions meant that water flowed in fast.  On April 15,  just around midnight, Thomas Andrews had worked out that Titanic would sink in about 2 hours. Just after that, Captain Smith gave the order to prepare for evacuation.

Titanic sank at 2:20 A.M, leaving many passengers who were still aboard in the last minutes, to the mercy of the ice cold waters.

Antti Kustaa Leinonen was lost in the disaster and his body wasn’t ever found. His widow was paid £50 in compensation.
