Auguste Louis Coutin was a French cook and an employee of Titanic's À la Carte Restaurant .
Auguste Louis Coutin was born on 7 March 1884 in Chambéry, Savoie. He was the first son of Joseph Coutin a restaurateur and owner of the Joseph Coutin Café at 14, Rue Croix d'Or. He was married to Joséphine Bugnard.
Auguste learned to cook in his parents' café and then worked in Parisian restaurants before being hired in 1904 by Luigi Gatti, an Italian chef who owned two restaurants in London. On 30 May 1905, Auguste married Ernestine Fournier, with whom he had two children: Robert, born 18 October 1904, and Marcelle, born 10 June 1908.
In June 1911, the ocean liner Olympic entered service. The À la Carte Restaurant was managed by Luigi Gatti who appointed Auguste as the chef of the tickets; a few days later, on June 19, his wife Ernestine passed away. Following her death, he sent his children to Chambéry so that his parents could take care of their grandchildren.
When the Titanic, Olympic's sister ship and White Star Line's flagship, entered service, the Olympic's crew, under the guide of Luigi Gatti, moved entirely to the new ship. Auguste Louis Coutin was given the fuction of Entree Cook on Titanic. He was 28 years old at the time.
On the night of April 14, 1912, the ship collided with an iceberg in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean on its way to New York and sank within three hours. Auguste died in the tragedy, like the rest of Luigi Gatti's team. Only the two female Cashiers and the kitchen's clerk survived, out of more than 69 employees.
His body was never found or identified. Above the family tomb the inscription says: "To the memory of Auguste Coutin (1884-1912) / Deceased in the catastrophe of the Titanic."
