Bernard Hill (1944 - 2024) was a famous English actor who wss well-known for playing Théoden in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and portraying Captain Smith in the 1997 movie 'Titanic'.
Bernard Hill was born on 17 December 1944 in Blackley, Manchester. He was brought up in a Catholic family of miners. Hill attended Xaverian College, and then Manchester Polytechnic School of Drama at the same time as Richard Griffiths, who he co-starred with in Gandhi (1982). He graduated with a diploma in theatre in 1970.
Hill was married to Marianne, with whom he has a son named Gabriel. He lived in Suffolk and was a longtime supporter of Manchester United FC. In 2019, Hill received an honorary degree from the University of East Anglia.
Hill has the honor of being the only actor to have appeared in more than one film that won 11 Academy Awards, for his roles in 'The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King' and 'Titanic'; the was only one other film in history that won 11 Oscar awards as of 2022: 'Ben-Hur', but Hill didn't appear in that one.
He also presented in at least two documentaries about Titanic. One being: 'Titanic - Secrets Revealed' and another is Titanic: 'Southampton Remembers'.
