Edvard Johannes Pekoniemi was the son of a farmer, born in the rural commune of Heinola, Mikkeli, Finland on December 12, 1890. His parents were farmer Mikko Juhonpoika Pekoniemi and Erika Jaakobintytär. Edvard came from a large family, he had many elder sisters and one elder brother. He also had a younger sister. Some of them were half-sisters.

Edvard Pekoniemi embarked on the Polaris in Hanko on April 3, 1912. The ship would take many of Titanic’s Finnish passengers to Hull in England.

On April 10, he was in Southampton to embark on the new vessel which left port after noon. His destination was New York and the ticket he bought was for Third Class.

On April 14, Titanic had a touch with an iceberg which she tried to avoid at the last moment, but it was too late. Her starboard side had damage and small ruptures had occured beneath the waterline. The ship was now starting to fill with water.

On April 15, realising the ship would sink, Titanic’s captain prepared the evacuation just after midnight.

The ship sank at 2:20 A.M, leaving many of its passengers to the cold mercy of the icey Atlantic Ocean. Edvard Johannes Pekoniemi died in the sinking of the Titanic and his body was never recovered. His family was later paid £75 in compensation.
