Elizabeth Nye was a passenger on Titanic.
Early life[]
Elizabeth Ramell was a native of Folkstone, Kent, England, where she was born on May 27, 1882 to Thomas Ingram Rammell and Elizabeth Ann Griffiths. She had at least 4 siblings.
In 1904 she married to Edward Ernest Nye.
In May of 1911, her husband suddenly died at the age of 30. The grief-stricken young widow returned to England to spend time with her family.
Titanic[]
In April 1912, she took passage for the Titanic to return to her adopted home of New York. She had a ticket for Second Class.
It is believed that she took care of baby Frank Philip Aks when she had taken a seat in lifeboat 11 and he was thrown in by an impatient man. Lifeboat 11 was picked up by the rescue vessel, the RMS Carpathia which had come to Titanic's aid after receiving her distress signal. On April 18, Elizabeth arrived in New York. She She was met by members of the Salvation Army.
Later life[]
She remarried to Colonel George Darby, a local New Yorker who originated from England and worked for the Salvation Army, which gave Elizabeth a future job at the orginisation. The couple had one son, George, who was conceived on March 30, 1915. For most of her life, the family lived in the Bronx.
She was interviewed by Walter Lord for his book 'A Night to Remember'.
Elizabeth passed away on November 22, 1963 in Asbury Park, Monmouth, New Jersey. She was 81 years old.
