Ernst Adolf Sjöstedt

Ernst Adolf Sjöstedt was a passenger on the RMS Titanic.

Early life[]

Ernst Adolf Sjöstedt was born on September 9, 1852 in Västergötland, Sweden. He was the son of  Anders Gustaf Sjöstedt and Emma Gustafva Forssell, both from Swedish origin. Ernst had 10 siblings.

Ernst first became a mountain engineer in Sault Ste Marie. He later migrated to the United States to work for Bethlehem Steel in Pennsylvania. He would invent all kinds of big, industrial devices.

In 1882, Ernst married Jessie Kathleen Winslow in Georgia. She was from Canada, born in Woodstock. Ernst was 29 and Jessie was 17.

They had two daughters. One was named Lottie Emma Ingeborg. He moved to Canada in 1890 to join the Nova Scotia Steel Company in Bridgeville, Nova Scotia. In 1899 he was promoted as chief metallurgist. In 1904, he was hired by the Lake Superior Steel Company and the family moved to the Sault. St. Marie in Ontario.

In April 1912, he had been in Sweden on a business trip. He was commissioned by the Canadian government’s Mining Department. The aim was to study methods to extract copper-sulphite ore and electric iron melting. When he was finished, he went on his way back to  St, Ontario. Travelling via Gothenburg, he reached England.

Titanic[]

On April 10 he stepped aboard Titanic in Southampton. He was 59 years old at the time. Sjöstedt had tickets for Second Class.

On April 14 the ship had grazed an iceberg on starboard side, which caused enough damage to her hull to let tons of seawater in. On April 15, after midnight the commanding crew had come to the conclusion that the ship was sinking and they ordered for evacuation. Titanic foundered at 2:20 A.M and Ernst became a casualty in this disaster. His body was never found. His research papers were also gone during the shipwreck.
