Frank Henry Gosling was a Trimmer on the Titanic.

Background[]

Frank Henry Gosling began life thanks to Frederick Gosling and Ellen Eliza Green, who had their foundations in different shires of England. Frederick inhabited a town in Essex on his first day. Ellen had dawned in Sussex and could meet her son on January 7, 1887. She had gone through the throes of delivering more children but was not spared from sorrow, as from a total of five, two would be left. The other name that was given to a child was that of Frederick Alfred, who had appeared in 1880. Frederick and Ellen made it happen when their ceremony of faith was held in 1878.

Frederick was a non-commissioned commander for the Royal Navy. Frank’s timeline saw the Goslings living as far north as  Peterhead in the Scottish Aberdeenshire by 1891. In 1901, they had made their way back to Portsmouth. Frederick was now a smokewear retailer and Frank was cantoned at the Royal Hospital School in Greenwich, London, where he was issued the traditions of the sea. This was the perfect place to groom students into recruits for the Royal Navy and that’s exactly what Frank did since February 1903, having been a gatekeeper just before.

His time of it at the Royal Navy was not without chafings. One of his offences was absconding and he had seen the inside of a dungeon more than once. On May 27, 1907, the life with the Royal Navy was over. It can be posited that he seeked his merits on civic vessels not long after that. Ellen Gosling had departed from life in 1908.

In 1911, Frederick was in the arms of another woman, who first tidied his dorms for him. They were Porthsmouth citizens. Frank was not around. Louisa Jane Wood, the name of the woman, had also have to make do without her other half until pledging the vows to Frederick. Frederick and Louisa Jane Cocksegde, her original name, did so in 1911.

Titanic[]

Frank Gosling was a Sontonian in 1912, at least for the time that he had made it to Trimmer for the Maiden Voyage of Titanic. Titanic needed lots of these men, as coal had become more scarce when labour unions had protested with the winning of the valuable substance. Titanic was a ship that made Southampton proud. They had already thrived with the crossing of her younger sister ship, the RMS Olympic. Frank had also been on this ship with its crew, most recently in fact before his working agreement with the newer steamer was enclosed on April 6.

At the end of the month, 5 pounds and 10 shillings would be available for Frank, who was placed among the first Trimmer brigade that had 2 spells from 12:00 till 4:00. For unknown reasons, he was listed as ‘Sidney’ Gosling.

On April 10, the joyful occasion of Titanic’s first ever passage had come on song. Her long-awaited trip was met with great expectation and had drawn a large crowd, but it also got off on the wrong foot with another ship. When Titanic’s escorts had released her, she perpetrated a lot of performance. The New York cabled at a portside berth had gone wayward due to Titanic's propeller muddling and was luckily caught before she could bruise Titanic.

An hour later, Titanic made Southampton look like a speck of dust as she took distance from the English mainland, having a tarriance at France and another one in Ireland, which was on the next day. Between the American continent and Europe was the Atlantic Ocean, the major shiproute in 1912. Titanic would need 6 days to get across, before she could be alighted in New York.

On the late night of 14th of April, there were two men in the crow’s nest, busy peering into the darkness. At 11:39 P.M, not far from midnight, when their watch would be over, something white broke through the indistinct, star-clustered expanse. Soon, they could tell what it was. No binoculars were needed to determine this was an iceberg and it became ever  clearer that she was of a measurement scaling over the Forecastle Deck, even the Boat Deck perhaps. Look Out Man Frederick Fleet laid it out to Sixth Officer Moody at the other end of the telephone line shortly after Fleet drew the attention of the bridge via the bell, which clamoured three times, a sign of something being dead ahead of the ship.

The First Officer had seen enough and made the Titanic convolute around it with retrogressed motion. These commands could not be implemented in time for Titanic to safely get by, but it would have required only a few extra seconds to succeed, meaning that Titanic was almost clear, but not quite enough. Her underside was tagged by the frozen water, which then showcased itself to be a very hard substance. The front decks on Titanic’s bow also got littered with scraps of ice. After that, the unfrozen water that carried the iceberg, proved to be the next problem for the giant ship, which was still a dot on the ocean, which now found its way inside her. The first floors in 6 compartments got very wet and it couldn’t be stopped quickly.

Captain Smith had never gotten out bed so fast. He was on the bridge soon after the sound of the scraping had ceased. When Officer Murdoch informed him of the cause of this jiggle that Smith had felt, Smith wanted to have soundings taken throughout the ship. He pulled the sleeve of the Titanic’s well-respected deviser, Thomas Andrews. He was on board as First Class passenger and was always busy seeing how the ship could be improved. Now, he was asked if the ship could be saved.

Together, they ratified Titanic’s chances at getting on with her voyage, or wether she could sail at all.  Andrews declared Titanic a wreck in the next 2 more hours, after gathering enough knowledge which he combined with the ship’s own capabilities, that were best known by him. It was time for Titanic to face destiny. The reality was not lost on Captain Smith, who had to clear the ship of people as fast as he could. He knew he could only save half, as there were only 20 lifeboats. At 12:05 A.M, on April 15, the preparation of the boats was underway.

The sinking process of Titanic was slower than Andrews’ maths had predicted, but that was still not sufficient for Titanic’s crew to get all boats securely into the water. The last two were rather picked up by the sea that had already advanced onto the Boat Deck. Merely thirteen minutes were left as soon as this happened.

Those were the most dramatic moments of the ship, in which many of her furnuture was washed away, tilted of its foundations, slid down the decks and many of her lofty public rooms were obliterated, as was the ship itself. Funnels had come off and the First Class dome over Titanic’s showpiece, the 7-deck high Grand Staircase, was smashed in by a torrent of water.

An Engineering Crew that could never be honored enough, stayed put and maintained enough lights till the ship was at such a declension that nothing could be done no more. They had exerted themselves to keep the water back, but it was as if all taps were running. Titanic cracked open when an unsupported hunk of her stood out of the water diagonally, as the lights were killed. The stern dislodged from the rest and could only be seen for two more minutes, bolted itself upright and slumped down vertically.

Amidst all of this, Gosling’s candle was blown out. Only 4 names among the Trimmer platoon could carry on with their lives. A total of 1503 souls expired due to severly crisp waters. Gosling’s body would never be seen since that night.
