Ilmari was the youngest of the couple's six children. His siblings were; August Aleksander Tekla Dagmar, Artur Alarik, Aina Sigrid and Berta Karolina.

In 1909, Ilmari's brother Artur emigrated in Canada aboard the RMS Empress of Britain. In 1910, he crossed the border to go establish himself in Astoria, Oregon, United States, where he first worked in boarding houses before building his own bakery on Duane Street called the Finnish Home Bakery. Ilmari, impressed by his brother's work, decided to join him in Astoria in 1912.

For his trip across the Atlantic, he booked passage as a Third Class passenger on the RMS Titanic with ticket number 3101287, which cost him £7 18s 6d. He had also already booked a train ticket to Astoria £15 when he boarded the Titanic in Southampton on Wednesday, April 10th, 1912. Ilmari perished in the sinking and his body, if recovered, was never identified.

His relatives later received £50 in assistance from the Titanic Relief Fund.
