Josef was a farmer who lived in Altdorf, Kanton Uri, Switzerland. Born there on 24 March 1887, he was the son of Karolina Haas and her husband Zacharias Arnold Franchi. Josef had a brother, Ambros, and a sister, Anna.
He became married to Josefine Franchi. On December 9th, 1911, their son Josef was born.
The couple received prepaid tickets from relatives in New Glarus, Wisconsin, USA. They did not have enough money to take their son Josef and so he was left behind with his grandparents.
The couple boarded as Third Class passengers at Southampton along with his cousin Aloisia Haas. Josef shared cabin #58 on F-Deck with Anton Kink, Vincenz Kink, Albert Wirz, Leo Zimmermann and Wenzel Linhart. Josef was 25 years old at the time.
Josef and his wife died in the disaster that followed, when Titanic hit an iceberg on the night of April 14, and sank more than 2 hours later on April 15. Their bodies weren't found. Their son was given financial compensation by the the Lord Mayor's (Mansion House) Fund. Hegrew up with his grandparents Korlina and Zacharias Arnold-Haas in Attinghausen, Switzerland. He later married in 1944 and passed away in 1973, Baden, Switzerland.
