She's a goddamn liar! God only knows why, like that Russian babe, Anesthesia! Rose DeWitt Bukater died on the Titanic when she was seventeen. If she was still alive , she'd be over a hundred by now. Her name was Rose DeWitt Bukkater|Rose Dawson back then. Then she marries this guy named Calvert. They move to Cedar Rapids and she punches out a couple of kids. Now Calvert's dead and, from what I hear, Cedar Rapids is dead.

—Lewis Bodine warning Brock Lovett this whole thing could be a load of bollocks

Lewis Abenarthy as Lewis Bodine in the 1997 Film Titanic

Lewis is a friend of Brock Lovett. A redhaired, bearded, overweight technician, he wore a black t-shirt with a smiley face shot on the head. He seemed to be a Titanic buff and the "geek" of the team on board the Akademik Mstislav Keldysh. He operates the Keldysh ROVs and guided Snoop Dog into the wreck of the RMS Titanic, controlling it to uncover Caledon Hockley's safe.

He often swears and does not mind insulting or discouraging Lovett in friendly terms. After their failure to find the Heart of the Ocean in the safe, Bodine reminded him of Geraldo's ruined career in an attempt to warn his friend.

You know, Boss, the same thing happened to Geraldo and his career never recovered...!
Turn the camera off. Turn it off!!

—Lewis Bodine trying to make light off Brock Lovett's disappointment, while Brock gets a bit miffed and is done with it.

While Rose DeWitt Bukater was on her way to the Keldysh he recited to him all his research on "Rose Dawson's" life, claiming insistingly that she was dead, and Rose Calvert was only a fraud seeking publicity, comparing her to the case of Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna.

She's got her whole ass sticking up in the air, we're talking 20, 30, 40,000 tons, and she's not designed to handle that kind of weight. So what does she do? Sckchhhth! She splits.

—Lewis vividly describing the sinking to Rose, something that really fascinated him.

Lewis demonstrated to Rose a 3D animation-simulation of the Titanic sinking, mimicking the sounds of the disaster with his mouth, concluding that it was "cool".

Let me get this straight: you were gonna kill yourself by jumping off the RMS Titanic? That's great!! All you had to do was wait two days...!
Lewis...

—Lewis making a bit of an insensitive joke about Rose's story, before Brock Lovett reprimands him.

He later found it funny that Rose wanted to jump off the Titanic, laughingly adding that she could as well wait for only two days.

I never found anything on Jack Dawson. There is no record of him, at all.

—Lewis ponders over Rose's story that just ended, wondering why he never heard about Jack before.

After Rose finished her story, he was very touched just like the others and told Rose he'd found nothing on Jack as of yet.

Behind the Scenes[]

In order to bring an authenticity to Brock Lovett’s team, James Cameron elected to cast several real-life crew members of the Keldysh into the film. Since they were not trained actors, none were intended to be for speaking roles. Being quick witted and a natural before the camera, Lewis Abernathy (crew member and friend of Cameron’s) proved to be the perfect fit for the character of Bodine, who was initially written for a more trained actor. Abernathy brought many of his real-life personality traits to the character.

Both Cameron and Bill Paxton coached Abernathy to help him remember lines, but also encouraged him to improvise when necessary when his knowledge of the Titanic was needed in certain scenes. For instance, when showing Rose the computer simulation of the sinking, Abernathy improvised much of the dialogue.
