Maria Kink was born on the first of January 1889 in Mahrensdorf, Styria, Austria. She was the youngest child of Vinzenz Kink-Hofer, being born after her brothers Anton (1883) and Vincenz (1885). Sadly she never got to know her father, who died too short after her birth.
Her mother whose name is unkown, died in May 1911. Maria at the time was single and she worked as a maid.
After that, she moved to Zürich with her brother Vincenz to live with their brother Anton and his young family. They all chose to emigrate to America together and so boarded the Titanic in Southampton. Their destination was Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Maria was 22 at the time.
Maria was in Third Class cabin #190 at the stern on F-Deck with her sister-in-law and neice along with Aloisia Haas and Josefina Arnold. Her ticket was given to her by the agency Kaiser & Cie in Basel.
On the night of April 14, disaster struck as the ship had collided with an iceberg and started to take on water. They were woken up by Anton and Vincenz, who had checked things out at the bow and had seawater coming into their cabin. They had left with their lifebelts to come and take their family with them. As they were making their way to the Boat Deck, both Vincenz and Maria were separated from her family and never seen again. She perished in the sinking and her body, if recovered, was never identified.
Her brother Anton was given her death certificate and compensation as her only surviving relative.
