Philipp Edmund Mock was a First Class passenger aboard RMS Titanic who survived the sinking.
Early Life[]
Born as the son of German immigrants Richard Mock and Emma Mock in New York City on August 16, 1881, Philipp Edmund Mock studied art in Europe and attended Suwanee University. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity and served in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Spanish-American war.
Titanic[]
Philip boarded Titanic from the Nomadic in Cherbourg with his sister Emma Schabert to return home from a business trip and stayed in cabin C-28. The siblings were impressed by the ship, noting that it didn't roll because of her sheer size.
On April 14th, at 11:40 P.M. Titanic had grazed an iceberg. They had witnessed the ice and also saw how bright and star-lit the sky was. Around 12:05 A.M., a tall person had told them to grab a lifebelt. They did so and they went on deck. The steam of the funnels was deafening.
Emma was prepared to stay with Phillip, even after Bruce Ismay tried to get her into a boat, but she refused and he regarded it as a mistake to not have boarded the boat.
Someone called out that there was a boat being readied at the height of the A Deck, and Emma went down there with Phillip. There were plenty of men in that boat and brother-dear tried to move her to get on. Emma started to become afraid, and she could feel the tension hanging in the air. She clenched Philip's arm. The crowd had noticed there was a woman amidst them and they made way for them. One sailor grabbed Emma by the arm to guide her into lifeboat 11, but she still didn't want to go without Phillip. Eventually, both she and Philip could get in.
Later Life[]
In 1914, Mock married Alvis Ehrman who was born February 3, 1881 and died on August 18, 1963. The couple, who were childless, resided in New York, where Mr. Mock became involved in banking, as well piano manufacturing. The couple moved from New York to Florida in 1935, where Mr. Mock began instructing art at The Casements in Ormond.
He had memberships in the Ormond Golf and Country Club and the Alpine Mountain Club in Switzerland.
Philipp Mock passed away on June 16, 1951, at the Halifax District Hospital, Daytona Beach, Volusia County, Florida. His body was forwarded to the Carey Hand Crematory and his ashes are interred at Oak Hill Cemetery, Birmingham, Alabama (Block 9, Lot 57).
