I've worked for the White Star Line for twelve years. I'm a trusted employee. Who do you think they'd come to believe? Me? Or Mr. Dickie? Who isn't Mr. Dickie at all.

—Simon Doonan to Jamie Perse

Simon Doonan is a fictional character of the 1996 Miniseries Titanic, where he serves as the main antagonist. He is portrayed by Tim Curry.

Biography[]

Crewman Simon Doonan befriends Jamie Perse, a fellow criminal who has stolen someones belongs and is chased by the police, and meets Simon and Mr. Dickie in bar, who he later steals a ticket from, to board Titanic. Doonan gives his hat to Jamie so that the two of them can hide from cops. He plans for him and Jamie to steal numerous gold and jewelry from the rich passengers on the Titanic. However, things go out the window when Jamie falls in love with another passenger named Aase Ludvigsen, and Simon has his eyes set on her too.

After Carlinda Jack and her daughter have left Aase alone, Doonan rapes and beats her up in the Third Class showers on April 14, between 11:00 P.M. and 11:30 P.M., less than an hour before Titanic hits an iceberg. He covers her mouth as she tries to call for help. The incident causes her to lose her faith and will to live. Doonan forces Jamie to abandon Aase, much to Jamie's chagrin. He also locks the gates to Third Class, preventing the passengers from reaching the decks. After the ship hits an iceberg and begins to sink, Jamie confronts Doonan in his stateroom where he gives him a diamond tiara and he puts the gold he stole in a bag.

Doonan plans to board a lifeboat by disguising himself as a woman since men were not allowed by officers to board a lifeboat on one side of the ship, but Jamie objects on going since they would be taking spots from women and children. Doonan responds, "some poor cows and their matey kids down in steerage will never know the difference" and tells Jamie he cannot help the steerage passengers escape, followed by making discriminatory comments against them. Jamie is disgusted and angered by his comments and finally realizes his true nature when Doonan let it slip how he shouldn't worry about getting a turn on Aase and Jamie realises he has raped her. Enraged, Jamie attacks Doonan, demanding him to tell what he did to her. Doonan retorts by gaining the upper hand and pinning Jamie to the wall and states that she was "begging" for it and continues to assault him before kicking him and saying "you're going down with the ship". Jamie retorts by saying if that happens he wont be needing no tiara, and throws it, leaving the cabin as Doonan shouts "save yourself boy, save yourself!".

Jamie has Aase get into Isabella Paradine's lifeboat. Unknown to Jamie, Aase, and Isabella, Doonan sneaks on the same lifeboat, disguised as an old woman.

Later after the Titanic sinks, Aase and Isabella beg Fifth Officer Lowe to go back and help dying passengers in the freezing water. Doonan protests and reveals himself to the passengers in the lifeboat. Aase attempts to fight Doonan, she calls him an animal and tries to knock him off the lifeboat. Doonan however gets the upper hand and knocks Aase into the water. Next, he then pulls out a gun and orders the passengers in the lifeboat to sit down, otherwise he will shoot them. Isabella tells him animals like him wouldn't do this to their own kind. She and Officer Lowe attempt to rescue Aase from the freezing water by having her reach the oar of the boat; when Doonan orders them to sit down again, Officer Lowe whacks Doonan with the oar, snapping his neck and he falls in the water, dead.

Doonan's dead body is then shown floating in the freezing water with money floating around him. As a result of being thrown in the ice cold water by Doonan, Aase suffers from mild hypothermia and is taken to the hospital aboard the Carpathia. But she comes by after Molly takes care of her and Jamie gives her soup.
