Thamine Jabbur was a passenger on the Titanic.
Background[]
Thamine Jabbur was born in the Syrian part of the Ottoman Empire, part of current Lebanon somewhere close to the year 1893. When she grew up, she went on a journey. We don’t know her destination, but she was with a younger girl from the North of the current Lebanese area, the town of Sar’al. She might have been related to Thamine, as her name was Hileni Jabbur.
Titanic[]
Hileni and Thamine were registered as housekeepers when they went onto the Titanic in Cherbourg on Wednesday, the evening of April 10. They were booked in Third Class as they left with the mighty ship on her Maiden Voyage.
On the night of April 14, the Titanic got in trouble when an iceberg was overlooked until it suddenly became clear to see, while Titanic was too close to get away from it. The best efforts turned a potential head-on collision into a side-swiping collision, but the consequences were worse. Her starboard side had heavy damage below the waterline. The openings were small, but lots of water could find its way through into her interior. The lowest deck flooded fast and it got Titanic’s designer and her captain worried.
At midnight on April 15, they had both established something that couldn’t be imagined before. Titanic was going to sink. Her buoyancy was lost and she had just hours to go before they would lose her. Five minutes past 12, the captain took action and called the crewmen to let them uncover the lifeboats and ready them.
How Thamine fared isn’t known, but she was not among the rescued in the lifeboats. Titanic proceeded to sink deeper and she was history at 2:20 A.M. Thamine became a casuality in the sinking, along with her close acquiantance or family member. Hileni’s body was actually discovered many days later, Thamine’s was lost forever. Hileni was given a proper burial in Halifax.
